The Luna Jewellery Collection: Connecting Roman and Maltese Beliefs About Moon Cycles
Here’s what inspired us to create this Collection!
Who is Luna?
Luna is the ancient Roman Goddess who personified the moon. At night, she roams the skies in her white chariot driven by silver-winged horses and lights up the sky.
Malta and the moon
The moon has long been an environmental phenomenon, shaping our culture from pre-historic times. The lunar cycles were predominant in our historical agricultural and fishing practices, some of which are still believed to work in today’s life. Several Maltese proverbs show that the Maltese community used to have a great belief in the moon’s supernatural or even superstitious powers, particularly when it comes to a woman’s fertility and having children. An interesting one is: “Jekk fil-Qamar tħuf (timxi) issaħħaħ il-ġuf”, meaning that the chances of getting pregnant increase when one walks under the light of a full moon.
Nowadays, yoga and meditation practices are quickly becoming part of our culture. These practices also teach us how to be in harmony with nature. The moon is very often a symbol for rekindling our past and present selves.
The Sleeping Moon:
The sleeping moon is seen at the beginning and the end of the moon cycle. The new moon (waxing crescent) represents new beginnings: an ideal time to set new intentions and work on self-improvement. The old moon (waning crescent) is a time to surrender the things out of our control, self-reflect, and reconnect with ourselves.
The choice of colours in this collection
The white floral pieces represent Luna, while the black ones represent our nature. The leaves and florals have a golden lining, representing the moon’s slight light reflecting on Mother Nature.
Style:
Bohemian: a free-spirit and nature-connected style.
“Thus may these pieces help you connect with this cycle, to look within, reconnect, dream, recharge, and restart. ”
