Speranza

This collection draws its inspiration from the wild Maltese flower, the Large Star of Bethlehem, known locally as Ħalib it-Tajr il-Kbir, which means "milk of the big birds." The symbolism behind this name is beautiful—milk represents purity, and birds are seen as a sign of hope. From this, the name Speranza was born. Speranza (/speˈrantsa/) is a word of Latin origin, found in both Maltese and Italian, and it means "hope."

This flower blooms late in the season, in April and May, when most other flowers have already had their time. It’s a true symbol of hope, appearing just when nature seems to be slowing down. It’s as if, when the world becomes quieter and more barren, this flower keeps on growing, filling the countryside with its beauty. And isn’t that what hope is all about? Flourishing even when everything else seems still.

The Speranza collection is a reflection of this—an ode to hope, to resilience, and to the belief that beauty and strength can always emerge, even in life’s quieter moments.

Lejn tmiem Mejju
F’tarf il-jum,
Fix-xgħari qalb il-blat
Biddiltli l-burdata,
Meta lmaħtek,
Twarrad, tixxabbat
Lejn l-aħħar ftit dija.
Dlonk trażmettejt
Sens ta` tama.
U għalkemm
mhux hekk magħrufa
Iddeċidejt li nsejjaħlek:
Speranza.
— Quote Marisa M.
Close to the end of May
and end of day,
While in barren land, amongst rocks
You changed my mood,
when I noted you,
blossoming, creeping
towards the last minutes’ glare;
You inhibited a sense of hope.
And despite known differently,
I decided to call you:
Speranza.
